Letter from the Head of School

It only takes one visit to know that HMA is the place you want your child to grow, mature, and discover the talents that will lead them to becoming wise, capable, and constructive contributors to the world. I learned this first-hand when I visited the school for the first time, in my capacity as the incoming Interim Head of School, during the annual Celebration of Learning and Thinking in May 2022.

As a lifelong educator, I was tremendously impressed not only by the students’ subject matter knowledge but by their deep thinking and application of that knowledge to offering solutions to real life situations. More than that, I found them to be warm, engaging, curious, insightful, and filled with life and compassion for their community. HMA is a residential community at its best – a place where meaningful relationships among students from across Ethiopia and their faculty are nurtured and deeply felt.

Creating such a dynamic learning environment is the work of the school’s leadership, its faculty and staff. All of these groups have taken a personal interest in each student’s growth and development as wise and caring young men and women. The faculty have come to know their students intellectually while inspiring them through compassionate connections that bring out their best. These strong relationships in turn support work in rigorous and engaged classrooms. In addition to mastering the Ethiopian National Standards, HMA students use their deep content knowledge to address issues of real-world significance, engage in hands-on projects of their choice supported by faculty who are experts in their fields, and frequently present their work to others, as they did at the Celebration.

If you would like your child to excel academically and socially in preparation of becoming a world class citizen on a modern and beautiful campus, please visit the HMA website at or contact us to schedule a visit of our campus in person. Come tour our facilities, meet our remarkable students, observe a class in action. You will not be disappointed as you learn more about the many opportunities your child will have to play sports, engage in leadership opportunities, and develop themselves as knowledgeable and capable applicants to top colleges and universities in Ethiopia and around the world.

I could not be more honored or excited to lead this extraordinary community this coming year.

Warmly,
Mark C. Hale
Interim Head of School
